This year, my two five year olds made it obvious that they needed some sort of physical activity to keep their energy levels balanced. The constant wrestling and running in circles (literally in circles) was making mama three shades of crazy. In our small town, there isn’t much for kids to participate in, so when I discovered a local dojo with a grand master teaching, I was excited to get my little dudes signed up.
It’s been a month and they take a class three days a week. They’re learning so much and being active, which makes me happy. Their class starts shortly after school, so it’s just enough time for me to get them home and changed before running down to karate class. Of course they somehow find a way to request (whine) for a snack.
Puppy chow is a snack and dessert often requested in our home, so I created this new version using Honey Nut Cheerios for a sweet Karate Chow treat to satisfy my kiddo’s after school snack attacks. Any type of chocolate and peanut butter flavored snack is highly regarded and even celebrated in our home, so this disappears pretty fast around these parts.
To start, you’ll need to add some chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter to a large bowl.
Microwave it until it’s all nice and melty and then stir in some vanilla.
In a large zip closure bag, add some Honey Nut Cheerios and then the chocolate mixture.
Seal it and shake that karate booty. Or do some hi-yahs. Whatever works for you and gets those Cheerios evenly coated with chocolate peanut butter yumminess.
The final step requires powdered sugar and another few hi-yahs to coat everything.
Lay out the Karate Chow on a couple sheets of wax paper to dry. Once it’s all dry, you can enjoy or transfer back into a zip closure bag to store until you’re ready to enjoy.
This stuff is just so good. Peanut butter and chocolate are always a winning combination in my book.
While they’ve spent the last few weeks learning roundhouse kicks and tae kwon do forms, I’ve learned that having a quick and easy to grab snack on-hand is essential to a no-meltdown karate class. This Karate Chow is just the ticket and especially when I dole it out into individual little bags for a quick grab and go. This month, I also stocked up on snacks with the Vons Stock Up Sale, which runs from 09/30 through 10/15. With Cheerios, Yoplait, and Nature Valley all on sale, I took that as a sign from the snack universe that I had permission to grab as many as I could. Be sure to check out your local Vons for great deals and special prices throughout the sale.
